Of note: Lewis’s dad Steven met Reinhold Messner  yesterday (long story)messner.  Messner is arguably the world’s greatest climber.  He is renowned for making the first solo ascent of Mount Everest without supplemental oxygen and for being the first climber to ascend all fourteen eight thousanders (peaks over 8,000 metres (26,000 ft) above sea level.   But he also pioneered a route from the Antarctic coast to the South Pole, now known as the Messner route which is slightly shorter than the classic Hercules Inlet route that Lewis and Carl are attempting.

Reinhold Messner on Lewis’s attempt to become the youngest person to ski from the Antarctic coast to the Pole:

“He is young. It is tough.  Send him my best wishes”
